Commissioner of the King Hans Oosters has appointed Mirjam van ’t Veld as acting mayor of Wijk bij Duurstede effective September 8.

Last week, Iris Meerts informed the Commissioner of the King that she would not return as mayor of Wijk bij Duurstede. Due to personal circumstances, she temporarily stepped down from her duties in early July. Mayor Frits Naafs of Utrechtse Heuvelrug has been acting as mayor during the summer recess and will remain until September 7.

Mirjam van ’t Veld became mayor of the municipality of Maarssen in 2008 and in 2011 of Stichtse Vecht. In 2014, she became mayor of the municipality of Amstelveen. She then held various administrative positions in healthcare. Since 2023, she has returned to the position as acting mayor, first in Almelo and until recently in Groningen.

The commissioner consulted with the faction leaders from the municipal council prior to the appointment of Mrs. Van ’t Veld. She will remain in office at least until after the municipal elections of 2026. It is not known when the vacancy for a new crown-appointed mayor will be opened.
