The Province of Utrecht and a broad coalition of public and private partners urge the forming parties in The Hague to continue investing in the accessibility of Groot Merwede and Rijnenburg. In this area, the largest housing construction site in the Netherlands, approximately 75,000 homes and 40,000 jobs must be built in the coming years.
The Utrecht Metropolitan Area is one of the fastest-growing regions in the country. Due to its central location, strong economy, and good facilities, the demand for homes and workplaces continues to increase. Governments, educational and healthcare institutions, and companies are therefore joining forces to responsibly manage this growth.
Kings Commissioner Hans Oosters: Together we have the knowledge and expertise to tackle the challenges of rapid growth and continue building a healthy region where everyone enjoys living, working, and learning.
Merwedelijn essential for new residential areas
To open up Groot Merwede and Rijnenburg, a fast, reliable public transport connection is necessary: the Merwedelijn, including a branch to Rijnenburg. Currently, 1.8 billion euros is available for this. This amount consists of commitments from the national government, the Province of Utrecht, the municipalities of Utrecht and Nieuwegein, private parties, and a contribution of 200 million euros from the consortium of landowners in Rijnenburg.
Johan Spronk, chairman of the Board of ROC Midden Nederland, on the necessity of new homes: Utrecht benefits from building homes for everyone: from nurses to plumbers and from entrepreneurs to students.
Janine Vos, member of the Rabobank group management, emphasizes the importance of good connections: As a major employer, we see how important accessibility is to keep Utrecht innovative and livable.
Strong impulse for the Netherlands
The parties involved now see the moment to take the step towards realizing the full tram line. They call on the cabinet to continue building together. With investments in accessibility, we create space for everyone and give the Netherlands a strong impulse.
