The Province of Utrecht is testing new biobased asphalt on the N210 near IJsselstein. Instead of the traditional binder bitumen (made from petroleum), we use a binder of natural origin. It consists of residual products from agriculture, forestry, and the paper industry.

During the trial, carried out by contractor Dura Vermeer on behalf of the Province of Utrecht, three road sections of 300 meters each were laid with different types of biobased asphalt. Over the next five years, we will investigate how this sustainable asphalt performs in terms of wear resistance, skid resistance, and driving comfort. This is done within the CIRCUROAD program. In this program, the Province of Utrecht collaborates with companies and other governments on fossil-free asphalt on all roads.

Towards sustainability together

If this trial succeeds, we can apply this type of asphalt on a larger scale in the province. This is an important step towards more sustainable infrastructure. By sharing knowledge and results, we learn from each other and accelerate the sustainability of infrastructure in the Netherlands together. We work towards a healthy and safe environment for residents and future generations in which circular thinking and doing is the norm.
