The Province of Utrecht is participating again this year in the Week of Respect. Deputy Rob van Muilekom and Kings Commissioner Hans Oosters engage in conversations with students about respect, discrimination, and how to interact with each other.

Week of Respect

Since 2006, the Respect Foundation has organized the annual national awareness campaign, the Week of Respect, in the second week of November. Each year, the Respect Foundation reaches over 800,000 young people, including approximately 58,000 in the Province of Utrecht.

For this, the Week of Respect collaborates with municipalities, hundreds of guest speakers, partners such as social organizations, sports federations, and thousands of schools (primary, special primary, secondary, special secondary, vocational, and international schools), sports clubs, youth work and neighborhood sports organizations, after-school care, and libraries. The province is also financially contributing this year.

Talking with students

Hans Oosters gave an explanation about his role and the tasks of the Province of Utrecht at the Bouw & Interieur College Amersfoort. Topics included building permits, nature conservation, sustainability, and public transport.

Subsequently, we spoke with students about current issues, including the farmers protests. How do they view these? More importantly, how can we continue to have good conversations even when we think differently?

Important theme

Participation in the Week of Respect inspires and activates young people to contribute to a society where they feel at home. Because what you learn young, you carry with you for life.

In the short term, participation leads to a safe atmosphere in the classroom, sports club, and neighborhood. In the long term, it leads to young people who have the courage to make the right choices, feel at home, and actively contribute to a respectful society; young people capable of passing on their ideals and enjoying doing so.
