The Provincial Executive of Utrecht has established a new subsidy scheme to improve livability in villages with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants. The aim is to support communities in these smaller villages in strengthening social cohesion, so that villages remain places where people feel connected to each other. The Vital Kernens province of Utrecht scheme 2025 - 2027 will open on September 1, 2025.
To enhance vitality, the province offers villages the opportunity to apply for a so-called village deal. A village deal is a set of agreements to work on at least one major societal task (a transition) through the community with support from the municipality, and in collaboration with entrepreneurs and social organizations in a small core located in the province of Utrecht. The province offers not only financial support but also trust to communities to take the initiative themselves.
Community Alliance Utrecht
“We are just going to do it. We give the community a push,” said Deputy Rob van Muilekom. He emphasizes the trust in the power of communities to take their own future into their own hands. Communities can rely on the help of the Community Alliance Utrecht (GAU). This alliance supports villages with practical advice and guidance. The partners of the GAU are: Katalys, Omzien naar Elkaar, and the Utrecht Association of Small Kernels.
The subsidy scheme is an important step in promoting a strong social structure in smaller cores, which benefits livability. The province hopes to contribute to a future in which villages are not only well accessible but also form thriving communities where people can live happily.
