Three floors of the Provincial House are available longer for the reception of Ukrainian refugees. One floor will remain available until January 1, 2026, while the other two floors can accommodate refugees until September 2026. This extension means that the Provincial House is available for emergency shelter for another year. The current rental agreement with the municipality of Utrecht was originally set to expire in September this year.
The province quickly opened its doors in May 2022 and set up part of the Provincial House as a temporary shelter for refugees from Ukraine. Three office floors have been converted into living spaces where the municipality of Utrecht, together with the Salvation Army, provides emergency shelter. The Provincial House can accommodate up to 270 people.
Previously Extended
The reception in the Provincial House is proceeding satisfactorily, and the rental agreement with the municipality of Utrecht has been extended several times. Deputy Has Bakker: It is great that we can extend again and contribute longer to the high demand for shelter places.
It has been agreed with the municipality of Utrecht that two floors in the Provincial House will remain available until September 2026, and one floor until January 2026. The municipality has identified another location, allowing for a gradual reduction in capacity. This means that the municipality of Utrecht does not have to organize alternative housing for a large group all at once.
Looking for a New Location
In the coming months, there needs to be a clear view of another location to accommodate the people. The Provincial House is not a permanent shelter. Currently, work is being done on renovation and sustainability plans for the Provincial House. After the final design is approved, expected by the end of 2025 / beginning of 2026, the work is scheduled to start according to the current plan after September 2026. During the renovation and afterwards, the Provincial House will not be suitable for habitation.
