The municipal council of IJsselstein has decided to propose Ester Weststeijn as the new mayor of IJsselstein. This happened on Thursday, June 26, during a closed council meeting. Subsequently, the recommendation was announced in an open council meeting.
Ester Weststeijn (47) has been mayor of the Gelderland municipality of Rozendaal since 2019. From 2012 to 2019, she worked for the municipality of Pijnacker-Nootdorp, first as a senior communication policy advisor, then as a corporate controller. Before that, she worked as an advisor at the municipality of Dordrecht, at a consultancy firm, and at the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK). Ester Weststeijn studied Public Administration and Business Communication at Radboud University in Nijmegen. She is married and has two children.
Connector and Networker
IJsselstein was looking for a new mayor after Patrick van Domburg became mayor of Bronckhorst in Gelderland earlier this year. On February 17, 2025, the municipal council of IJsselstein established the profile for the new mayor. It indicated that they were looking for a mayor with an open attitude who is approachable and possesses curiosity and empathy. The council also wanted a connector with natural authority and a true networker. Fifteen women and nineteen men identified with the profile and applied. Agnes Jongerius is currently the acting mayor of IJsselstein.
Next Steps
The recommendation now goes to the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK). Based on the recommendation, the minister prepares a Royal Decree. The swearing-in of the new mayor of IJsselstein is expected to take place at the end of September 2025.
