The Province of Utrecht and all 26 municipalities within the province signed a letter of intent on October 9, 2025, to improve regional cycling routes. In total, the 26 municipalities have over 130 cycling projects planned until 2029. These projects range from the construction of bicycle streets to addressing unsafe traffic situations. The Province of Utrecht aims to financially support the municipalities.
With the regional bicycle network, we want to provide our residents with safe, comfortable, and quick bicycle connections between home, school, work, public transport hubs, and other important destinations, said the joint aldermen.
The signing took place during the meeting of the Utrecht Traffic and Transport Council (UVVB). The municipalities and the Province of Utrecht have committed to continue collaborating to improve regional bicycle connections throughout the province. The agreement specifies which projects the municipalities want to work on until 2029. It also indicates how the province can support through grants. This includes widening bike paths, constructing bike streets, improving crossing points at intersections, and creating separate bike paths. Each year, progress on the projects is discussed in the administrative meetings of the different regions.
Bicycle as a Priority
The Province of Utrecht is a desirable place to live, work, meet, and relax. The number of residents and visitors to our region is expected to grow significantly in the coming decades. To accommodate this growth and promote cycling as a solution, joint investments in the regional bicycle network are necessary.
Deputy André van Schie: “To keep our region healthy, livable, and accessible, it is important to focus on cycling. The Province of Utrecht cannot do this alone; we need the municipalities for that. This signing is an important step. In addition to these cycling projects, we are also focusing on new cycling routes, such as the cycling route Amersfoort – Utrecht, which opened in June.”
