On Wednesday, July 16, the province of Utrecht and the municipalities of Stichtse Vecht and De Ronde Venen launched the Future N201 program. The work begins with the first subproject, which will address the intersections in Vreeland, the intersection N212-Hoofdweg, and the connection to the A2.
The start event took place at the carpool lot in Vinkeveen and was attended by deputy André van Schie, councilor Hans van den Akker (Gem. Stichtse Vecht), councilor Anja Vijselaar (Gem. De Ronde Venen), and manager Arjan van Rijn (Water Board Amstel, Gooi and Vecht).
During the meeting along the N201, a construction sign was unveiled. That sign symbolizes the measures that will be taken in the coming years to make the road safer, more livable, and better accessible for road users and residents. In their speeches, the officials emphasized the importance of good cooperation between the province and the municipalities to achieve these goals.
Road Works Subproject 1
Dura Vermeer is carrying out the work, which is expected to be completed in October 2025. During the start event, extra attention was requested for the safety of the road workers during the works. The work will cause inconvenience and may lead to traffic delays but is necessary to improve traffic safety and flow in the future.
Program and Measures
The Future N201 program includes five investment projects aimed at improving traffic safety, livability, and accessibility. Subproject 1 concerns the intersection N212-Hoofdweg, the two intersections in Vreeland, the connection of the A2 to the N201, and a widening of the bike path.
The measures consist of:
- reducing the speed from 80 km/h to 60 km/h by creating traffic plateaus at the intersections;
- replacing the existing traffic signal installations (TSIs);
- relocating and widening the bike path along the Singel;
- extending the existing wishwall (type of sound barrier) to reduce noise pollution for the homes;
- creating an additional waiting lane for traffic from Utrecht towards Hilversum.
The other subproject investment projects for the centers of Vinkeveen, Loenersloot, intersection N402, and Mijdrecht are still in the preparatory phase. The last subproject is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2031.
Participation and Information
The province of Utrecht is working closely with the municipalities of Stichtse Vecht and De Ronde Venen to align the impacts of the adjustments with the surrounding municipal roads. Residents and road users will notice in the coming years that work is being done on the N201. Think, for example, of research into nature and soil, and work such as relocating cables and pipelines.
