The Municipality of Vijfheerenlanden and the Province of Utrecht want to develop the bus stations near the Lekbrug in Vianen into a modern public transport hub: a central place where travelers can easily transfer between different modes of transport.
This new public transport hub should contribute to better accessibility of the region and encourage travelers to travel more sustainably.
Why a public transport hub?
A public transport hub is a node where various forms of transport come together, such as buses, shared bicycles, shared cars, and extensive P+R facilities. By offering travelers more convenience and comfort, such as good facilities, clear walking routes, and sufficient parking spaces, it becomes more attractive to leave the car behind.
This is important because the region continues to grow and the highways are already regularly congested. The public transport hub should help reduce this pressure on the road network.
Expansion of P+R spaces and redevelopment
According to alderman Joop van Montfoort, the development aligns with the Vianen Area Vision established in March 2025: “We will redevelop the existing bus stations and gradually expand the number of P+R spaces to at least 500 in the coming years. The redevelopment of the Van der Valk hotel is also part of this. Various scenarios are being explored.”
The current area near the Lekbrug is mainly functional but lacks comfort and a clear appearance. The research therefore focuses on a public transport hub with improved walking routes, an attractive entrance area, and a modern, safe environment for travelers. This includes space for shared mobility, a comfortable covered waiting area, charging stations, good lighting, and wifi. This makes traveling easier and more sustainable.
Cooperation with the Province of Utrecht
The Province of Utrecht is cooperating to improve public transport in the region and offer travelers more options. A public transport hub with fast public transport, good bicycle facilities, and shared mobility fits well with this.
The municipality and province have signed a cooperation agreement. This includes agreements on research into:
- The spatial integration of the P+R
- The growth of the bus station into a full-fledged public transport hub
- The accessibility and traffic connections of the hub
The planned redevelopment of the Van der Valk hotel also plays an important role. The municipality and Van der Valk are working together on this.
What happens next?
All research will be bundled into a plan with different scenarios and a preferred variant. Residents and other stakeholders will be carefully involved. The schedule is as follows:
- First research results: summer 2026
- Follow-up research and participation process: second half of 2026
