On November 12, the Provincial Council approved the investment proposal to improve traffic safety on the Utrechtseweg/Dorpsstraat/Arnhemseweg (N224) in Renswoude. This allows the project preparation phase to begin.
The N224 is a provincial road with heavy traffic, carrying more than 10,000 vehicles per day. The road runs through the residential area of Renswoude and connects Scherpenzeel and Veenendaal. The road has a narrow profile, leaving little space for physical measures. Research conducted in 2024 by the municipalities of Renswoude, Scherpenzeel, and Woudenberg, together with the provinces of Utrecht and Gelderland, revealed significant traffic safety issues in Renswoude.
Further research into improving traffic safety
Therefore, the Province of Utrecht investigated in 2024 and 2025 how the traffic situation in Renswoude can be made safer and better balanced with accessibility and livability. Several information evenings were also held where residents could discuss with the province and the municipality of Renswoude and respond to the preliminary design for improving traffic safety on the N224 in Renswoude.
Responses from residents evening
The questions raised during the residents evenings and stakeholder meetings have been collected and answered. An overview of the most frequently asked questions and their answers can be found on the project website: www.provincie-utrecht.nl/n224renswoude
Start of preparation phase
Now that the Provincial Council has approved the investment proposal for measures to improve traffic safety on the N224 in Renswoude, the preparation phase of the project can begin. During this phase, the plans will be further technically developed. Formal steps necessary to implement the measures will also be taken, such as spatial planning procedures, traffic decisions, and permit applications. The Province of Utrecht will organize another information evening for residents in spring 2026 to provide an update on the project. After completing the preparation phase, the province will contract a contractor and the work can be carried out. Work is expected to start at the end of 2026.
