On Thursday, January 29, 2026, the official starting signal was given for the demolition of the former V&D building in Zeist. In the coming years, 189 rental homes will be built here. After ten years of vacancy, the old V&D finally gets a new future.

Deputy Rob van Muilekom of the Province of Utrecht, together with Danny Visser from housing corporation Woongroen, alderman Walter van Dijk from the municipality of Zeist and Martin van Gent from construction company AKOR, removed the V&D logo from the building. With this symbolic act, the redevelopment project in the center of Zeist has begun.

From plan to execution

From early 2029, the delivery of the 189 new, sustainable rental homes will begin. About one third of these are social rental homes. In addition to the homes, there will be commercial spaces and an underground parking garage.

This housing development is made possible in part thanks to various government subsidies, including from the Province of Utrecht. In this way, the province helps municipalities, housing corporations and project developers to bring housing projects from the planning phase to execution.

New rental homes

Deputy Rob van Muilekom: “Given the housing shortage, it is very good that Zeist will have a large number of rental homes within a few years, also for people with a smaller budget. My compliments to the municipality of Zeist, Woongroen and AKOR who are working on this together. I am glad that we could contribute from the province and am sure that many people will enjoy living here in the heart of Zeist.”
