Mirjam van ’t Veld, acting mayor of the municipality of Wijk bij Duurstede, has informed the Kings Commissioner Hans Oosters that she will step down from her duties as mayor as of February 9 due to health reasons. She deeply regrets this but must prioritize her health now.
In January 2025, Van ’t Veld fell backward off a stage during an event at the Stadsschouwburg in Groningen. At that time, she was the acting mayor of that city and sustained a concussion from the fall.
Rehabilitation Process
A few weeks later, she resumed her work. It now appears that she still has complaints and, on medical advice, has decided to start a rehabilitation process of several months to fully recover. This can no longer be postponed.
Next Steps
The Kings Commissioner will soon meet with the faction leaders in the municipal council to discuss the steps that need to be taken. Van ’t Veld started last September in the municipality of Wijk bij Duurstede.
