The construction combination BAM Infra Netherlands and SPIE Netherlands has been selected to renovate the movable part of the Zeeland Bridge, the bascule bridge, and to provide the Zeeland Bridge with new asphalt. The work is necessary to ensure traffic safety and extend the lifespan of this important traffic artery. Province of Zeeland, BAM Infra Netherlands, and SPIE Netherlands will jointly shape the execution design for the work starting in September.
What exactly will happen?
The Zeeland Bridge, built in 1965, is over 5 kilometers long, making it the longest bridge in the Netherlands. The bridge, which has now been designated as a national monument, is a crucial connection for road and shipping traffic. Part of the Zeeland Bridge is the double bascule bridge with steel movable parts. The bascule bridge is nearing the end of its lifespan. Due to the age of the bridge, material fatigue, and the increased number of heavy vehicles cracking has occurred in the steel deck of the movable bridge. The steel movable sections will be renovated to remedy cracking and extend the lifespan of that part of the bridge by at least 30 years. To minimize inconvenience for traffic and the environment, the renovation will be taken as an opportunity to provide the Zeeland Bridge with new asphalt along its entire length.
Tender
The Province of Zeeland started a tendering procedure in January 2025 to find a contractor for the work. Initially, this did not yield any bidders. In the past period, the Province of Zeeland has been in talks with BAM Infra Netherlands and SPIE Netherlands about executing the work under the same conditions as the previous tender. This has led to the quick selection of the construction combination BAM Infra Netherlands and SPIE Netherlands for the major maintenance at the end of 2026.
Deputy Harry van der Maas (Infrastructure): “I am pleased that we can award the contract to experienced construction companies. It is important that the Zeeland Bridge is renovated by the end of 2026 to ensure traffic safety for the future. The Zeeland Bridge is not only an icon but also one of the most important traffic arteries in Zeeland. I have great confidence in BAM Infra Netherlands and SPIE Netherlands for the execution of these important works!”
Eric van Avendonk, director of national projects at BAM Infra Netherlands: “As a construction combination, we are pleased with the trust of the Province of Zeeland in our expertise for the renovation of this iconic bridge that is important for the Zeeland and Dutch economy. This September, we will start in a construction team with the Province to create the execution design. An intensive phase of collaboration in which we will prepare the realization phase very carefully, so that in the fall of 2026, we will make the bridge future-proof and keep Zeeland sustainable accessible.”
