Press release

The Province of Zeeland will soon stop combating nests of the Asian hornet as the budget for 2025 is running out while reports are rising explosively.

Number of nests increases rapidly

In 2024, about 300 nests were reported. This year, the count is already at 1213 nests by early September. This number is expected to rise further in the coming months. This growth indicates that the Asian hornet has permanently settled in Zeeland. Eradication is no longer feasible according to experts.

For this reason, the Province of Zeeland decided last year to phase out its efforts. Earlier, France and Belgium had already decided to change their policy from eradication to management simply because the growth could not be stopped.

In 2024, the Province of Zeeland nevertheless doubled its budget compared to the previous year to make a significant impact. At the same time, it was determined that for this year (2025) the budget would be halved, with a final phase-out to follow in 2026.

Extra funds allocated

The province has done everything possible to keep the fight going as long as possible. In 2024, the budget was doubled compared to the previous year to make a significant impact. For 2025, the budget was halved, with the prospect of a final phase-out in 2026.

Additionally, this year extra funds were allocated: the remaining amount from 2024 and the maximum allowable additional work within the tender have been added to the budget. This means there is now an additional 150,000 euros available for combating. Thanks to this effort, the fight can continue a little longer, but this amount will, given the increase in summer nests, be exhausted in the foreseeable future.

What does this mean concretely?

The fight by the province will stop in the coming weeks. New reports can no longer be followed up by the contracted company. From that moment on, the choice will lie with individuals, municipalities, and organizations to hire a specialized company for the removal of nests.

Collaboration

The permanent presence of the Asian hornet in Zeeland is a fact. This requires a different approach to this species. Where there are risks or nuisances, local measures will be necessary. Collaboration between municipalities, residents, beekeepers, and other parties is crucial.

Role of the province

The Province of Zeeland will continue to focus on knowledge sharing, training of volunteers, and monitoring of the spread. This ensures that Zeeland remains prepared for the future. More information can be found at: https://www.zeeland.nl/onderwerpen/natuur-en-landschap/aziatische-hoornaar
