Press release

The repair of the East tube of the Westerschelde Tunnel at the beginning of 2027 will have a major impact on the surrounding area. Therefore, the Province is already engaging in discussions with stakeholders.

At the beginning of 2027, the East tube of the Westerschelde Tunnel will be closed for four months to repair concrete damage. The impact goes beyond the tunnel itself. Therefore, the Province of Zeeland, the municipalities of Borsele and Terneuzen, the Zeeland Safety Region, and the N.V. Westerscheldetunnel are working together on an accessibility plan. For this, the Province is organizing discussions in November with representatives from various sectors – from logistics and healthcare to education and tourism.

Serious inconvenience

The necessary work will cause serious inconvenience because the capacity of the Westerschelde Tunnel will be halved. Therefore, the partners are consulting with local stakeholders such as major employers, healthcare and educational institutions, and transport companies. These consultations take place well before the planned repair in the form of roundtable discussions. This allows broad input on measures to keep Zeeland as accessible as possible. Additionally, these discussions provide an opportunity to share ideas and express concerns about the measures and accessibility.

Stay informed

In November, the partners will send out a first newsletter about the Westerschelde Tunnel repair and its impact on accessibility. Interested parties can sign up on the website werkaandetunnel.nl. This website will be the central point where all information about the works and accessibility will be found.
