Press Release

The Zeeland Heroes Fund has reached a wonderful milestone. The collaboration between the Association of Zeeland Municipalities, Province of Zeeland, and the Oranje Fonds has made the hundredth award. It has gone to Community Center de Pit of Stichting Buurtwerk Goes-Zuid. Due to this festive occasion, the community center was highlighted on Friday, September 12. Deputy Harry van der Maas and the intended chairman of the Association of Zeeland Municipalities (VZG), Constantijn Jansen op de Haar, and Sandra Jetten, director of the Oranje Fonds, paid a visit.

Meeting is Central

Zeeland is a small province in terms of population, but not in terms of area. Because the province is less densely populated, it is a greater challenge to develop and maintain social connections. The Zeeland Heroes Fund was therefore established in 2018 at the initiative of the Province of Zeeland, the VZG, and the Oranje Fonds with the aim of strengthening existing social initiatives in Zeeland and stimulating new social initiatives. The Zeeland Heroes Fund mainly focuses on meetings.

Community Center de Pit

“Community Center de Pit in Goes is a prime example of a place where meeting is paramount. People see and talk to each other, play games, take walks, and lend a hand. This creates real connections. It is therefore very nice that we can celebrate the hundredth award at this location,” said Deputy van der Maas.

Mr. Jansen op de Haar adds: “The Zeeland Heroes Fund is a flywheel to realize beautiful things with the residents of Zeeland. It creates a sense of pride to feel the strength of the community, as you feel in this community center. It makes me proud that we can achieve this together.”

Future of the Zeeland Heroes Fund

At the beginning of the year, the collaboration was extended for four years. Over the past six years, the community has been able to build a lot together. The extension of the fund is a wonderful investment in the strength of the Zeeland community.
