On Wednesday, December 10, the artwork on the new roundabout in Kapellebrug was officially unveiled. The unveiling marks an important milestone in the reconstruction of the Kapellebrug Traverse. Deputy Harry van der Maas (Province of Zeeland) and alderman Gino Depauw (municipality of Hulst) jointly performed the festive unveiling. Ronny Ivens, the creator of the work, was naturally also present.

From idea to supported design from the region

The idea for an artwork on the new roundabout originated several years ago in  . Because the major works in Kapellebrug have a significant impact on the environment, the Province wanted to give something valuable back: something made and supported by people from the region. At the end of 2022, the village councils of Clinge and Sint Jansteen called on residents and artists from the area to submit designs, with the theme the clog. Out of several submissions, the design by Ronny Ivens from Hulst was unanimously chosen. The work stood out because of the strong connection to the region and originality.

A tribute to region, landscape and craftsmanship

The work consists of a corten steel poplar, a tree species symbolizing the characteristic landscape of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Around the trunk are three clogs made of wood-colored granite, each pointing to one of the surrounding villages: Clinge, Sint Jansteen and Kapellebrug. The clogs refer to the clog industry that was concentrated in East Zeeuws Vlaanderen and with which Ivens has a personal connection. His grandfather was a clog maker. Behind the clogs are three slightly curved poplar leaves forming a sign of embrace.
