Press release

The Province of Zeeland is reopening the subsidy scheme for wolf deterrent measures. All Zeeland hoofed animal keepers – this time also pig keepers – can submit an application. The provincial government aims to prevent hoofed animals from remaining unprotected when the wolf settles in Zeeland.

applications

From September 1 to November 1, 2025, keepers of hoofed animals can apply for subsidies. A total of €95,000 is available. A maximum of €20,000 applies per applicant.

The subsidy is intended for practical measures, such as:

  • fixed wolf deterrent fencing (at least 1.2 meters high and electrified),
  • car winders for a flexible five-wire system,
  • flexi-nets and other protective measures.

‘Don’t wait, protect your animals’

Deputy Wilfried Nielen emphasizes that the responsibility lies with the animal keeper: “In Zeeland, we do not yet have an established wolf, only occasionally a wandering one. But if one settles, you will have a serious problem if you have not taken measures. As an animal keeper, you are legally required to protect your animals from predators. If you do not do that, you not only risk damage, but you can also get into trouble yourself. That is why I say very clearly: don’t wait, use this subsidy and ensure your animals are protected.”

Background

Since 2021, wolves have been sporadically spotted in Zeeland. In 2023 and 2024, attacks were confirmed in the municipalities of Reimerswaal and Tholen. The province had previously opened a subsidy scheme for this reason. In 2024, the entire amount was utilized, but during the in the spring of 2025, no valid applications were received.
