Press Release

The Province of Zeeland aims to significantly improve traffic safety and flow on the Deltaweg (N256), between Goes and Noord-Beveland. The road is an important traffic artery for both passenger and freight transport and becomes especially busy in summer due to tourist traffic. It is therefore one of the busiest roads in Zeeland and is considered unsafe.

A new road design

In recent times, the Province, together with the municipalities of Goes and Noord-Beveland and other parties, have created a so-called preliminary design. In the new design, the Deltaweg will be arranged as a future-proof route with improved safety and flow. The new road will have two lanes, separated by a median strip, and a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour. On the west side, next to the parallel road, there will be a separate cycle path. Thanks to adjusted intersections and extra space for emergency and bicycle traffic, traffic safety will be increased and traffic can flow smoothly. The design also takes into account a possible future expansion to dual carriageways. This is related to the growth of traffic on the Midden-Zeeland route, which runs via Goes to South Holland.

The main intersections will be addressed:

Goes intersection grade-separated

  • The Deltaweg will cross the ’s-Heer Hendrikskinderendijk via a viaduct;
  • The s-Heer Hendrikskinderendijk will remain at the current level;
  • The main carriageway between Goes and the Oudedijk will get a central reservation;
  • The current bicycle tunnel on the south side of the Deltaweg will be removed. Cyclists will use the north side of the road in the new situation and cross the on- and off-ramps via traffic light-controlled crossings.

Langeweg intersection grade-separated

  • The Langeweg will cross the Deltaweg via a viaduct;
  • Bus stops along on- and off-ramps;
  • Carpool parking remains (at least the same capacity).

Zandkreeksluice adjusted

  • Carriageways will be spaced further apart;
  • Longer additional exit lanes to the bypass;
  • Adjusted traffic signaling;
  • Cycle path and parallel road will be separated where possible.

Deputy Harry van der Maas (Infrastructure): “Our ambition is to thoroughly address this important traffic route and thus put an end to the traffic problems. With this design, we take an important step towards a safe and smooth Deltaweg. This is good news for all road users. We are also already considering a future expansion to 2x2 lanes.”

Additional options

In 2026, the Province will further develop the design into a definitive plan. This plan will also elaborate on three possible options, so-called coupling opportunities. For example, it will be investigated whether a wildlife crossing can be constructed near the De Schenge nature reserve. This crossing connects the nature areas on both sides of the road and allows animals to cross safely, reducing the chance of collisions with wildlife. Furthermore, the Province will explore the possibility of constructing bicycle tunnels at the Goes intersection and will investigate whether the main carriageway on Noord-Beveland can be raised in view of flood risk.

Finances

The preliminary design requires a substantial investment. The expected costs for the design are approximately 154 million euros, with a possible deviation of 35 percent up or down. The additional investments for the coupling opportunities are not yet included. In the coming period, the Province will work on a more accurate estimate and will engage in discussions with other co-governments about the necessary financial resources.

Decision-making process

The Executive Board of now submits the preliminary design to for decision-making. The decision will take place in December. After that, the final design of the Deltaweg will be made.
