More than forty years after the construction of the Biggekerke bypass, this provincial road between Koudekerke and Zoutelande is due for renovation. From June to mid-July 2026, the main carriageway, from the Koudekerke bypass to the Blauwpoortseweg roundabout near Zoutelande, will be completely resurfaced with new asphalt. The traffic lights at the N288-Valkenisseweg intersection (Biggekerke) will be replaced during the same period, and new traffic lights will be installed at the N288-Zoutelandseweg junction. Before these works can begin, four culverts must first be replaced.
Replacing culverts
In preparation for these works, four culverts will be replaced. A culvert is a connection under the road between two waterways.
These four culverts are spread along the Biggekerke bypass. Two culverts are located between the Koudekerkseweg and Valkenisseweg junctions (km 5.840 and 6.535), one between the Valkenisseweg and Zoutelandseweg (km 7.065), and the last between the Zoutelandseweg and Werendijkseweg (km 7.860).

Detour routes
Except for the fourth location, cyclists at the other locations are diverted via detour signs. Car traffic does not have to detour there; traffic is regulated with temporary traffic lights.
At location 4 (between Zoutelandseweg and Werendijkseweg), there is no detour for cyclists, and car traffic must detour via Zoutelandseweg, Kaasboerweg, and Blauwpoortseweg.
Camping Werendijke remains accessible via Werendijkseweg.
Setting up work sites and rerouting traffic
To properly and safely set up the work sites, the Biggekerke bypass between Koudekerkseweg and Werendijkseweg will be completely closed to motorized traffic and partially to cyclists. This will be done in phases over five nights, each from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM.
The closures will take place in the evenings and nights of 5, 15, and 26 January and 5 and 12 February 2026. During this period, traffic will be diverted via Biggekerke.

If weather conditions permit, the culvert replacement works will be completed by Friday, 13 February 2026. At the locations where the culverts have been replaced, temporary concrete slabs lie in the main carriageway and cobblestones in the cycle path. These will be removed during the major maintenance of the main carriageway in mid-2026.
