Due to increasing geopolitical tensions, the importance of a strong, nationally independent defense sector is growing. The Netherlands must rapidly strengthen its armed forces, not only with more personnel but especially with the best knowledge, high-quality innovation and a strong industry. For this reason, the government is investing over one billion euros in the Dutch defense industry. This offers great opportunities for innovative companies, including in Zeeland.
Today, a Letter of Intent (LOI) was signed between the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Province of Zeeland, and regional development company Impuls Zeeland. This collaboration aims to stimulate innovative Zeeland companies to contribute to the national security and technological advantage of the Netherlands. The LOI was signed during Purple NECtar x Innovation in Defence, the knowledge and innovation event of Defense where the latest technological applications are shared.
The signing of the LOI marks the start of work on the Zeeland version of the innovation hubs. This enables Zeeland businesses to contribute to the innovation strength of Defense. The maritime manufacturing industry in Zeeland is an important sector, but there are more opportunities for innovative companies and dual use: products and services that can be used both civilly and militarily. Innovative SMEs play a crucial role as suppliers and contribute to our autonomy, security, and the future earning capacity of the Netherlands.
Innovative solutions are being sought in the fields of smart materials, maintenance, ICT, robotics, and artificial intelligence. Such developments are crucial to maintaining a technological advantage over potential adversaries. But solutions from other sectors are also relevant in the context of dual use. In Zeeland, innovations in the agrifood sector or within logistics companies can provide suitable solutions. Solutions not currently considered may arise through this intensive collaboration between the region and Defense.
