The main sources of air pollution in Zeeland are shipping and industry. The air quality in Zeeland meets the EU limit values. This is evident from research conducted by GGD Zeeland on behalf of the Province of Zeeland and the municipality of Terneuzen.
Even at low exposure to air pollutants such as fine particulate matter, health effects already occur, concludes Yvonne Bosch, researcher and advisor Environment & Health at GGD Zeeland. In her research on air quality and health in Zeeland, she emphasizes that sustained and additional efforts are needed to keep and improve the air quality in Zeeland.
Deputy Daniëlle de Clerck: The air quality has already improved in recent years. And in Zeeland, the quality is on average more favorable than in large parts of the Netherlands. As a Province, we are already working on the implementation of the Clean Air Agreement. But this report makes it clear that this topic must remain high on the agenda. And it clearly shows what governments, but also residents themselves, can do.
