Based on energy prices from January 2026, an average household will pay 1,993 euros this year for energy bills. This represents a decrease of 52 euros, or 2.5 percent, compared to the previous year. This is reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

The largest decrease in the energy bill is due to lower expected consumption, especially of gas. Also, the lower variable delivery rates for both gas and electricity contribute to a lower bill. On the other hand, as in 2025, there are price increases for fixed charges and transport. The energy tax on gas is also higher than in 2025.

CBS does not take into account possible costs that households pay for feeding self-generated electricity back into the grid. Households that supply electricity to the grid have often had to pay for this since the end of 2023.

Stronger Decrease with Higher Consumption

The energy bill is largely determined by the amount of consumption. This consumption varies greatly per household due to factors such as the number of people, insulation of the home, or heating behavior.

In addition, fixed costs also vary. For example, fully electric heated homes have no fixed costs for natural gas. Homes with district heating have relatively high fixed costs but, unlike other homes, do not need to purchase their own heating installation. These costs are important for the total cost picture but are not reflected in the annual energy bill.

At the price level of January 2026, a multi-person household in an old, large detached natural gas-heated home pays the most: on average 3,410 euros per year. Homes primarily heated electrically have the lowest energy bill, averaging 1,020 euros per year.

The average energy bill has decreased for all types of homes compared to 2025. Due to the combination of higher fixed costs and lower variable costs, households with high consumption benefit the most. Among natural gas-heated homes, the group with the lowest consumption improves by an average of 1.3 percent, while the group with the highest consumption improves by an average of 3.7 percent.
