At the end of June, we issued a warning for the Japanese Sea Nettle at Grevelingendam Beach. Swimmers experienced serious complaints after swimming at that location. During inspections over the past week, no sea nettles were found. For that reason, we are withdrawing the warning.

No Sea Nettles Present Anymore

In the Veerse Meer, sea nettles have been found for over 10 years. Warnings are issued during the swimming season from mid-June to the end of August. At the end of June, the sea nettle also caused problems in the Grevelingenmeer. There are now no sea nettles in the swimming area. The numbers had already clearly decreased over the past weeks, but now no live or dead sea nettles have been found.

This is a normal course of events. Through monitoring, we know that sea nettles swim around from the end of June to mid-August. The warning is therefore withdrawn on www.zwemwater.nl and the signs will also be removed.

Allergic Reaction

Contact with a sea nettle can cause a severe allergic reaction in a small part of the population. Therefore, we warn about the sea nettle. Contact with the Japanese Sea Nettle can lead to symptoms such as itching, irritation, and a red skin. In people who are sensitive, the skin reactions can be more severe.
