Under what conditions are two new nuclear power plants welcome in Zeeland? The province of Zeeland is engaging in conversation with its residents.
All residents of Zeeland can voice their opinions from the end of August to the end of September during street conversations and through an online survey. The province will also engage with young people and visit various schools.
Energy for the Future
The cabinet is considering building two new nuclear power plants in the province, and Zeeland wants to set conditions for this. The plants must not only contribute to climate goals but also ensure a better future for Zeeland. This is the moment for residents to help determine what the future of our province looks like, said Deputy Jo-Annes de Bat. We want a win-win situation for the national government, the province, municipalities, residents, and businesses.
Opportunities and Concerns
New nuclear power plants can have a significant impact on Zeeland. Consider construction disturbances, traffic disruptions, and housing needed for workers. On the other hand, there are opportunities for better education, more employment, and opportunities for businesses in Zeeland. The province wants to make good agreements about this.
Public Consultation
The province established several general conditions in 2023 and now wants to refine these with direct input from the residents of Zeeland, based on the Local Impact Report. A core group of Zeeland interest organizations advises on important themes, while residents can express their opinions through street conversations and an online questionnaire. Since young people are central to this vision for the future, the province also organizes discussions in schools to include their perspectives.
