Station De Vink has added approximately 400 bicycle parking spaces. This brings the total number of parking spaces at the station, located on the border of Leiden and Voorschoten, to over 1200.
This includes 224 extra bicycle spaces on the Voorschoten side. A large number of covered spaces have been replaced by a double-layer bicycle parking facility. Additionally, eight extra parking spaces have been created for larger bicycles, such as cargo bikes.
On the Leiden side, 168 extra bicycle spaces have been added. These mainly consist of covered parking spaces and eight extra spots for larger bicycles.
Freedom of Choice
“This fits perfectly with what we want in South Holland: more freedom of choice in traffic. The combination of bicycle and public transport works very well. For that, you need good bicycle parking spaces at stations,” says provincial administrator Frederik Zevenbergen (traffic and transport). Since 2017, a total of 13,000 bicycle parking spaces have been added at 14 South Holland stations, including Leiden Centraal, Delft, Gouda, and Dordrecht.
“Extra nice is that Station De Vink is directly on the Velostrada. This is our oldest cycling route, which allows for attractive and safe cycling between Leiden and The Hague,” says Zevenbergen.
What further increases the freedom of choice for travelers is that the orange shared bikes from Donkey Republic are now also available at Station De Vink. The yellow-blue OV bike was already present at this station.
Convenience for Travelers
“With this expansion, we are not only investing in extra parking spaces but also in convenience and comfort for the traveler,” says Helga Cuijpers, regional director Randstad South at ProRail. “A well-accessible and safe bicycle parking facility is an indispensable link in the journey from door to door. We are proud that we could realize this together with our partners.”
On Friday, the bicycle parking facility was ceremonially opened by ProRail, the mayors of the municipalities of Leiden and Voorschoten, and provincial administrator Zevenbergen. Together, they emphasized the importance of good bicycle facilities as part of a future-proof public transport system. Travelers were treated to ice cream on this warm day.
