Preserving Agricultural National Monuments through Roof Restoration

The subsidy scheme for major maintenance of roofs of agricultural national monuments provides funding for maintenance and restoration of the roofs of their agricultural objects.

Despite its densely populated state, South Holland still has many agricultural national monuments. The provincial Heritage Monitor 2020 showed that this category of heritage is in relatively poor condition compared to other categories of heritage.

Therefore, in 2023 we expanded the subsidy scheme for the restoration of national monuments with an additional paragraph “Major maintenance of roofs of agricultural national monuments.” This year, this paragraph was open for the third time, with €450,000 available.

On February 3, the subsidy scheme opened. In the first few days, 16 applications were received, spread across the province. We were able to honor all of them within our budget. However, some applications were adjusted downwards because we only subsidize restoration costs. Costs for restoration or addition of non-monumental components or sustainability are excluded from the budget.

New Opening in 2026

For 2025, the subsidy ceiling has been reached, and no more subsidies can be requested. On February 2, 2026, a new opening is expected. Please keep an eye on our website https://www.zuid-holland.nl/online-regelen/subsidies/subsidies/rijksmonumenten/ (opens in new window) and our social media channels. Owners can receive 50% subsidy on restoration costs, with a maximum of €40,000.

South Holland is rich in heritage. The province of South Holland actively engages in the preservation and restoration of national monuments and contributes to the maintenance of national monuments by stimulating restoration and preventing vacancy through repurposing. National monuments tell the story of South Holland and provide quality and identity to their surroundings.
