Back to Battery from Delft receives a loan of €350,000 through the Early Phase Fund of UNIIQ. With this capital, the startup is building a pilot installation to validate its circular battery recycling technology. The investment is made possible with contributions from RVO, Province of South Holland, the municipality of Leiden, and the municipality of Rotterdam.

Smart and circular technology from Delft

Back to Batterys technology extracts valuable raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel from old batteries in a clean and energy-efficient way. This contributes to a more sustainable battery ecosystem and reduces dependence on raw materials from China.

Role of the Province of South Holland

The Province of South Holland actively supports this investment as part of its commitment to a sustainable and circular economy. By investing in innovative companies like Back to Battery, the province stimulates the development of clean technologies and strengthens the regional ecosystem for battery recycling.

With Back to Battery, we strengthen South Hollands innovation capacity in circular technology. Battery recycling is essential for a sustainable future and a strong regional economy. We are proud that as a province we can contribute to the development of smart solutions that benefit both the environment and our strategic autonomy.” – Ton Jonker, Domain Director Economy & Energy Province of South Holland

Collaboration

Back to Battery collaborates with partners such as InnovationQuarter, TU Delft, and the Battery Competence Cluster - NL. The company produces test materials for potential customers and is exploring locations for a first production line.

“We want to show that battery recycling can be not only cleaner but also smarter.” – Steven Lans, CEO of Back to Battery

Investment from the Early Phase Fund and other resources

The investment comes from the Early Phase Fund (VFF) of UNIIQ. Early phase financing is a loan for innovative startups that want to test and further develop their idea. This fund is financed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate, RVO, Province of South Holland, and regional knowledge institutions. Thanks to an additional contribution from RVO and other partners, more funds are now available for innovative companies in South Holland.

“Back to Battery is a great example of entrepreneurship. The founders identified a gap in the European battery value chain from their own experience and vision, and acted on it by simply doing it themselves. This shows courage and ambition! With this loan, we help them bring their technology to the market and contribute to a more sustainable Europe,” - Jasper Geselschap, Fund Manager at UNIIQ.
