Molenlanden is the 26th municipality in South Holland where the shared bicycles from Donkey Republic are available. This allows for easy door-to-door travel using a combination of public transport and bicycle.
Supplement to Other Means of Transport
Provincial administrator Frederik Zevenbergen (traffic and transport) and alderman Maarten van Helden (accessibility and mobility) took 100 shared bicycles into use in the municipality of Molenlanden on April 17. Zevenbergen: “Shared bicycles are an important supplement to other means of transport. If you get off the train or bus, you can now ride a bicycle from Donkey Republic to your work or school. The province is happy to invest in smart shared mobility and is therefore pleased with this collaboration.”
Freedom to Travel
Donkey Republic offers a lot of freedom to travel. Through the Donkey Republic app, users can see where the shared bicycles are located and where the drop-off points are where you can return your bicycle. An advantage is that you can leave the bicycle at any drop-off point, and you do not necessarily have to return it to your pickup location.
Shared Bicycle is Gaining Popularity
Shared bicycles are gaining popularity: the successful OV-bicycle has been around for a while, and users of Donkey Republic made 650,000 rides in 2024 alone. Since last week, the Donkey bicycles have also been available in Alphen aan den Rijn, bringing the total to 26 municipalities in South Holland. Donkey Republic will further develop the offering in collaboration with the province and municipalities in the coming years.
Supplement to Transportation
The shared bicycles in Molenlanden are a nice addition to the shared bicycles that became available in the region in 2023 and at the stations of the MerwedeLingelijn. Van Helden: “Shared bicycles are a modern and innovative solution that makes it possible to take a bicycle after a journey by public transport for the last distance to one of our villages or cities. We are very pleased that the province and transport company Qbuzz want to contribute to the accessibility of our beautiful municipality.”
Combination of Public Transport and Shared Bicycle Offers Travelers an Alternative
Rich Singh, travel manager at Qbuzz, adds: “We are increasingly moving towards providing mobility solutions. The shared bicycle fits well with public transport. Where previously the car was used for the entire trip, the combination of public transport and shared bicycle now offers an alternative. And with that, we enrich the options for our travelers.”
