The Bonnenpolder in Hoek van Holland is becoming a new nature reserve. The Dutch Nature Network in South Holland is expanding by 154 hectares.

With a festive opening ceremony, the official start was given for the realization of the new nature reserve in the Bonnenpolder in Hoek van Holland. Over the coming years, this former agricultural area of 154 hectares will be transformed into a unique nature reserve, becoming part of the Dutch Nature Network.

Peace and Recreation

The Bonnenpolder will provide space for peace and recreation, and many species of animals and plants will find a home there. An important milestone in a project that shows in the heart of the Randstad that nature and society can go hand in hand very well.

Symbolic Start

Representatives of all involved parties gave the symbolic start. They planted a poplar tree in the area that will soon become a nature reserve full of life. Prior to this ceremony, the initiators and administrators spoke about the plans for the area, cooperation, and challenges for the future.

Present at this opening ceremony were: Frans van Zijderveld, Head of Grounds and Buildings of the South Holland Landscape Foundation, Roy van Boekel-Gosens, Director of Nature Burial Netherlands (initiators and developers), Jeroen de Koe, Director of Nature Monuments (initiator), Deputy Arno Bonte of the Province of South Holland, Alderman Pascal Lansink-Bastemeijer of the Municipality of Rotterdam, and Administrator Nieske Dijkshoorn of the Delfland Water Board.

Nature and Recreation

Deputy Arno Bonte said: “With the Bonnenpolder, we are creating 154 hectares of new nature in one go in one of the busiest areas of South Holland. Thanks to new walking and cycling paths, we make the area attractive to stay in and at the same time relieve the recreational pressure on the nearby Staelduinse Forest, giving nature there some breathing space again. And soon we will also connect the Bonnenpolder with the Oranjeplassen, creating a large contiguous nature reserve.”

Work and Planning

The transformation of the Bonnenpolder is in full swing and is being carried out by Van Oord Grondstoffen B.V. In the coming period, work and machinery will be visible. This effort contributes to the development of a rich and green landscape. It is expected that the nature reserve will be publicly accessible in the autumn of 2026. Until then, work will take place in the area. It is expected that from autumn 2026 it will be possible to secure a final resting place at the Staelduinen nature cemetery.
