Starting October 20, the draft Revision 2025 environmental policy of the province of South Holland will be made public. The Revision 2025 is the largest and most complex adjustment of the Environmental Policy of the province in over 5 years. It is therefore also the most integral revision. The many challenges that South Holland faces have been carefully weighed against each other and balanced. From Tuesday, November 4 to Monday, December 15, the draft decision and all accompanying documents of the Revision 2025 will be available for inspection.

Proposed Changes

The Provincial Executive (GS) proposes to better protect the undeveloped space against urban developments, to preserve the qualities of the landscape and agricultural land. In addition, developments must take more account of water and soil. There will also be a greater focus on enabling wind energy in more places in the province, and they want to relax height restrictions for small wind turbines on farms. Additionally, GS is focusing on strengthening nature by expanding protected meadow bird areas and raising the water level in the peat meadows.

To ensure that residents have more say in the future layout of their province, GS also proposes to tighten participation policy.

According to provincial executive Arno Bonte, the revision creates a clear framework for new developments in South Holland. “With this proposal, we are making room to make the province future-proof. We face major challenges – from housing construction to climate adaptation – and these require clear choices. We ensure a good balance between living, working, nature, agriculture, landscape, and quality of life in our densely populated province.”
