The new intake point and pre-treatment for Duneas drinking water source will be located in the Leidschendammerhout. The council of the municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg gave the green light for this plan this week. The Province of South Holland has also granted its approval. This marks an important step towards securing the drinking water supply in the region after 2030.

From 2030, Dunea will need an additional drinking water source and purification capacity. In September 2025, it was announced that Dunea, together with all involved parties, chose a new drinking water system with a source in the Vliet. The location for the intake point and pre-treatment for the new source has now been found. The council of Leidschendam-Voorburg has signed a cooperation agreement with Dunea to make this possible in the Leidschendammerhout.

Deputy Arne Weverling is pleased with the decision: “We share the responsibility to ensure drinking water security for the future. The choice for the intake point and pre-treatment in the Leidschendammerhout is an important step in this. This gives Dunea the space to concretely start developing the plans and provides a supplement to the current river-dune system.”

The new source and purifications are expected to supply 10 billion liters of drinking water annually, in addition to the 85 to 90 billion liters that Dunea currently extracts from the dunes each year.

Nature-Inclusive

The Leidschendammerhout is a nature and recreation area in Leidschendam-Voorburg, part of which is included in the Dutch Nature Network. Like in the dunes, Dunea wants to combine drinking water and nature well here. Together with the province, municipality, and other involved parties, Dunea aims to strengthen nature in the area. Further agreements will be made in the coming period.

Involved Parties

Besides Dunea and the municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg, the Province of South Holland and the Rijnland Water Board are closely involved in the realization of the intake point and pre-treatment in the Leidschendammerhout. Together, these parties will further develop the plans.
