The new bicycle bridge over the Haarlemmertrekvaart was opened on Monday, April 14. The bicycle bridge forms a new connection between the existing bike path along the ring road of Voorhout and the Leidsevaart in Noordwijkerhout. The bridge has been named Trekvaartbrug.
With the Trekvaartbrug, new fast bicycle connections are created between Voorhout, Noordwijk, and Noordwijkerhout. The bridge is an important new link in the cycling network in this region. The province of South Holland and the Holland Rijnland region contributed to the bicycle bridge.
Councilor Marlies Volten of the municipality of Teylingen: “With the arrival of the bicycle bridge, cyclists from Voorhout can quickly cycle towards Noordwijkerhout. Especially from the new neighborhoods Hooghkamer and soon Nieuw-Boekhorst. The bicycle bridge is also an important new connection for the accessibility of the villages and station Voorhout. And students from the KTS can safely go to school via the bicycle bridge, as they no longer have to cross the busy N444.”
“The bicycle is indispensable for accessibility in South Holland. Not only for cycling from door to door but also in combination with public transport,” says Frederik Zevenbergen, deputy of traffic and transport. “Encouraging cycling also includes smooth and safe routes with good facilities. The Trekvaartbrug is a new link in the cycling network.”
Growing Demand for Transport
With the new neighborhood Hooghkamer (almost 1000 homes) – and with Nieuw-Boekhorst (1300 homes) still in the planning – the demand for transport around Voorhout is growing. In 2022, Volten and Zevenbergen opened the Bollendreef, the northern ring road of Voorhout. The province and municipality are also working together on the route for high-quality public transport Noordwijk-Schiphol.
