To increase and improve the habitat of native plants and animals in South Holland, the subsidy scheme Realization of habitat for iconic species, landscape elements, and food forests has been established. A total of €400,000 is available for this subsidy in 2025.
The province of South Holland will open this subsidy scheme on May 1, 2025. It concerns strengthening nature in the city and in rural areas. Nature makes life healthier, more beautiful, and is important for the livability of our province.
A healthy, biodiverse living environment is important. Increasing and strengthening the habitat of native plants, trees, and animals in both rural and urban areas contributes to the preservation of biodiversity and also improves the living environment for both humans and animals.
That is why we focus on preserving, restoring, and increasing biodiversity in South Holland, even outside nature reserves.
Applying for Subsidy
With the subsidy scheme for the realization of habitat for iconic species, landscape elements, and food forests we work along the line of iconic species. These are characteristic species for the various landscapes that South Holland has. When the habitat for these plants and animals is in order, a healthy nature that is in balance arises. We as humans are also dependent on this. Nature provides clean air, healthy food, and relaxation.
The subsidy can be applied for activities aimed at a significant improvement of the habitat for iconic species or habitat directive species. This includes, among other things, the construction of various landscape elements, such as groves of trees and shrubs, nature-friendly banks, ponds, reed parcels, and herb-rich grassland. The landscape elements contribute to strengthening biodiversity and improving the ecosystem.
A total of €400,000 is available for this subsidy in 2025. The application period is from May 1 to June 16, 2025.
Information Sheets for Iconic Species

These information sheets provide practical and visually appealing information about the habitats of these iconic species in South Holland. They contain clear guidelines and effective measures to support these species. Whether you are working on the design or management of urban or rural areas, with this knowledge you can easily take into account the needs of these iconic species and strengthen their habitat. Get inspired and contribute to a nature-rich South Holland.
