Schotdeurensebrug Almost Finished, End of Major Maintenance on Merwedekanaal in Sight

The work on the Schotdeurensebrug in Arkel is almost completed. On April 1, the bridge deck and other components of the bridge were reinstalled. This also signals the nearing end of the major maintenance on the 7 bridges over the Merwedekanaal. The work on the Schotdeurensebrug, and thus the maintenance of all bridges, will be completed on Friday, May 2, 2025.

On Tuesday, April 1, the technical spectacle could be viewed from a safe distance. Next to this, you can see a number of photos of the work.

Why was maintenance necessary?

The bridges are important for the connection between the villages on both sides of the Merwedekanaal. To keep the bridges safe and available for the cars, trucks, buses, and cyclists that use them, as well as for the ships that want to pass under them, regular maintenance is required.

What kind of maintenance was done?

The maintenance on the bridges varied by bridge and included replacing asphalt and concrete, renewing control systems and cables, and applying new paint layers. Commissioned by the provinces of South Holland and Utrecht, contractor Mourik Infra B.V. worked together with Antea Group on the major maintenance of the bridges over the Merwedekanaal.

“The systematic approach to the 7 bridges over the Merwedekanaal and the good collaboration in the construction team have ensured that the bridges are ready for the future. There has been incredibly hard work with a very nice result. A relaxed atmosphere in the team and everything under control, hats off!!” said Carla Weber, Director of Execution Domain - Province of South Holland.

Bridges Ready for the Future

With the completion of the Schotdeurensebrug, the bridges over the Merwedekanaal are ready for use again, and the infrastructure in the region has been significantly improved. The bridges will be safe and available for all users for the next 15 years.
