28 trains per hour between The Hague and Rotterdam. With the completion of the PHS Rijswijk Rotterdam project, this is now a reality. This completion is an important milestone within the High-Frequency Rail Transport Program (PHS). Thanks to a significant expansion of rail capacity, passengers are getting home faster between The Hague and Rotterdam: a train departs every few minutes.
John Voppen, CEO ProRail: “28 trains per hour on this stretch of track. That is really fantastic and I am extremely proud that we have achieved this together with all parties involved. In this very densely populated part of the Netherlands, public transport is now even faster and more reliable, allowing thousands of passengers to travel sustainably day in and day out.”
Frederik Zevenbergen, Deputy of Traffic and Transport of the province of South Holland: “Schiedam Centrum Station is a regional hub where trains, metro lines, city, and regional buses come together; an important transfer station. With the provinces contribution, we collectively found a solution so that intercity trains can continue to stop in Schiedam. This makes the station even more attractive and accessible for passengers from the entire region.”
Better Connected and Accessible Region
Increasing capacity is urgently needed, as the route between The Hague and Rotterdam is one of the busiest in the Netherlands. Every day, thousands of passengers use this connection. The province of South Holland is growing rapidly: by 2030, around 400,000 new residents are expected. ProRail worked on this project together with the province of South Holland, transporters, contractors, engineering firms, and other governments, on behalf of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
Better Accessibility
With PHS Rijswijk–Rotterdam, the region will remain accessible and attractive for living, working, and doing business in the future. The partners have jointly prepared the rail connection for tomorrows passenger growth on a sustainable, safe, and reliable railway for everyone.
