In 2025, in the second tranche, another 18 initiators can expect a subsidy within the package of measures for the 7 heritage lines of South Holland. The Provincial Executive decided on this on April 1, 2025, and made € 773,185 available for this purpose.
The heritage network tables associated with the heritage lines determine each year together which initiatives contribute the most to making our heritage lines tangible. Among the projects in this second round of 2025 are a traveling exhibition and 14 walking, cycling, and boating route apps around the Oude Rijn river.
A Trekvaart Experience and historical research into the Admiraalshuis in Gouda. Will the city crane at the city wharf de Koningspoort (Rotterdam) be restored? Is there a QR route along maritime-industrial heritage in the Krimpenerwaard and will you soon be able to experience their maritime history in Vlaardingen? In Rotterdam, 3 national monument cranes in the Entrepothaven will be restored.
An overview of all projects from the second tranche can be found in the Provincial Gazette Provincial Gazette 2025, 5763 | Government.nl > Official announcements (opens in a new window).
Reassessment of heritage lines
For 2025, instead of one, there were 2 rounds within the package of measures. This was partly due to the reassessment of the heritage lines. As of January 1, the heritage line Trekvaarten was expanded with 2 additional routes: Leiden-Utrecht and Gouda-Amsterdam and the heritage line Waterdriehoek has been transformed into the heritage line Maritime Industry.
Meindert Stolk, provincial executive for culture and heritage for the province of South Holland: “It is good to see that there are many beautiful projects in the second tranche of the package of measures that can also expect a financial contribution. Along with the newly added trekvaart connections and within the new heritage line Maritime Industry, the initiators show that they, together with numerous volunteers, have a warm heart for our heritage. Thus, they tell the story of South Holland that belongs to it with great enthusiasm and commitment.”
7 heritage lines
The province has 7 heritage lines: Atlantikwall, Historical Haringvliet, Landgoederenzone, Neder-Germaanse Limes, Old Dutch Waterline, Trekvaarten, and Maritime Industry.
A heritage line consists of 2 aspects: a geographical line (for example, the coast, river, or a trekvaart) and a shared story. For example, castles, estates, forts, bunkers, defense lines, archaeological finds, and trekvaarten are visible remnants of our history. They create an environment with its own identity in which it is pleasant to live, work, and recreate.
Together with over 300 external partners and supported by thousands of involved and enthusiastic volunteers, it is possible to visit, experience, enjoy, and learn about our history in South Holland. Thus, our heritage is preserved for the future.
Since the start of the heritage lines in 2012, around 900 projects have contributed to this. To introduce residents and visitors of our province to our heritage, accessible events are also organized every year, such as the Castle Day, Bunker Day, regional Trekvaart days, and various Roman festivals.
