To partially address the restoration backlog of National Monuments, the Province of South Holland will provide an additional €1 million in subsidies in 2026. From 2027 onwards, there will be a structural annual increase of an extra €1.8 million in the budget.
This means that in 2026 an amount of €5.4 million (including a previously promised €400,000 by the Provincial Executive) and from 2027 onwards €5.8 million annually will go to National Monuments, a number of small monuments, and monuments to which we must contribute out of necessity.
The Provincial States unanimously adopted this amendment to the 2026 budget on the initiative of the Christian Union.
Meindert Stolk, Deputy for Heritage and Culture: “Unfortunately, South Holland also has a restoration backlog when it comes to National Monuments. Approximately 75 National Monuments are restored each year. With the extra funds, we can financially support more National Monuments in the coming years.”
Active Contribution
South Holland is rich in heritage. The Province of South Holland actively works to preserve national monuments by encouraging restoration. National Monuments tell the story of South Holland and provide quality and identity to their surroundings. We cherish these monuments, such as windmills, castles and estates, maritime heritage, and churches, and provide subsidies where possible.
We do this within the Subsidy Scheme restoration National Monuments, but also from the Measures Package of our 7 heritage lines.
Together with the Restoration Fund and Culture Fund, the province also financially contributes to the Culture Fund Mortgage (opens in new window) and promotes the use of apprentice workshops in the restoration trade, in collaboration with Restoration Training Projects ROP (opens in new window) .
The Provincial Driver for Repurposing National Monuments supports monument owners with advice and assistance in repurposing plans.
