Companies and (knowledge) organizations in South Holland have been awarded over 2.4 billion euros in European subsidies between January 1, 2021, and September 1, 2025. This concerns subsidies for 2,636 projects with 3,252 South Holland project participations from 932 unique organizations. This results in an employment effect in South Holland of 36,032 FTE. The EU funds are therefore important for us!
European subsidies often support sustainability projects. The annual subsidy overview reports that various projects have achieved a CO2 reduction of 365 tons. The inventory includes not only project-related subsidies but also direct payments received by South Holland farmers. This amounts to 394.2 million euros. Finally, loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to South Holland organizations are also part of this inventory. The total size of these investments amounts to 1.9 billion euros.
Most money goes to knowledge and innovation
Of the EU subsidies managed by the European Commission, Horizon Europe is again the largest program both in awarded subsidies and in number of projects. Horizon Europe invests in knowledge and innovation. The high participation of South Holland organizations shows the strength of the regional knowledge clusters.
This and more can be read in the latest EU subsidy monitor 2021-2027 (reference date September 1, 2024) from the Province of South Holland. The EU subsidy monitor shows how much EU funding lands in South Holland, with which parties, and to which social themes these funds are allocated.
To better put the awarded subsidy into perspective, we compare it with the same measurement moment in the previous program period, namely September 1, 2018. At that time, the awarded subsidy to South Holland organizations amounted to over 1.4 billion euros within 3,173 projects and 1,722 unique organizations.
From individual applications to a sector fund
The positive difference of over 1 billion euros between the two measurement moments shows an increase of 74.2 percent in awarded subsidies in the current program period. What is striking is that at the same time fewer unique partners have submitted an application. This is explained by the subsidy being structured differently. For example, a sector fund now submits a larger application at once for multiple employers.
The figures from the EU subsidy monitor show the great result of South Holland parties and that many projects can be realized with EU funds. We encourage all South Holland parties to continue to make use of EU financing. We have specialist knowledge in-house to advise you on this; please visit our website for further information.
