With pride, the province of South Holland kicked off The Week of Our Food today. Here, guests were inspired by the provincial Food Vision. Three food changers also received the Value Ring for their contribution to a sustainable and fair food system.
“The future will be delicious!” With those words, the Gang of Progress concluded their story about the opportunities of technological development in the world of food. Innovation is certainly part of a system that provides food security - now and in the future - and contributes to vital citizens, a healthy planet, and a thriving economy.
But to achieve this, more developments play a role, and an integrated approach is necessary. This was the reason for provincial deputies Mariëtte van Leeuwen (Health & Welfare), Aad Straathof (Agriculture), and Meindert Stolk (Culture and Heritage) to take visitors through the South Holland Food Vision. This vision looks broadly, offers guidance, and connects initiatives.
Value Ring 2025: three food changers in the spotlight
Fortunately, South Holland is already buzzing with initiatives that bring this Food Vision to life. From neighborhood projects and innovative startups to inspiring recipes from chefs and promotion of regional products.
These initiatives inspire other residents, entrepreneurs, and administrators to join forces. Therefore, three food changers received the Value Ring 2025 today for their efforts:
- Jessica Zwartjes - founder and gardener of City Garden The Sweet Land in Leiden, where dozens of volunteers grow food for about 130 households.
- Deniz Ozer - working with youth in Rotterdam-South, where he provides healthy lunches and teaches young people to make healthy choices themselves.
- Marja van den Ende - initiator who encourages people to collect food by bike from farmers, gardeners, and stalls along the road: an inspiring example of the power of engaged citizens.
Together in Action
The room was filled with enthusiastic stakeholders; from supermarkets to food producers and from administrators to engaged (citizen) initiatives. Moderator and food systems expert Joris Lohman presented them with provocative dilemmas to engage in conversation with each other, so visitors could learn each others perspectives.
That connection is crucial, says Deputy Health and Welfare Mariëtte van Leeuwen: “In nutrition, a lot comes together. That’s why it’s important to look through different lenses at the same time: from innovation, from agriculture, and from health. Together with residents, entrepreneurs, farmers, and other societal partners, we can make a difference.”
