The State Secretary received an explanation from Cedin, who was commissioned by the province to update the Frisian core objectives, about the process and content of the new core objectives. The Frisian core objectives for primary education have been expanded to include attention to Frisian culture, and schools can connect the Frisian language and culture core objectives with those of other learning areas.

According to director Michiel Veenstra of ‘t Holdersnêst, the new Frisian language and culture core objectives offer schools many opportunities to give Frisian a strong place in education: “The new Frisian language and culture core objectives are about learning and using the Frisian language. In addition, cultural awareness has also been included. Knowing who you are and where you come from is important to ultimately achieve goals. We are pleased that this is part of the new core objectives.”

Deputy Eke Folkerts calls it a great milestone: “With the new core objectives, all children in Fryslân have the chance to grow up multilingual. This supports the general development of students and ensures that all children can fully participate in the bilingual Frisian society.”

The new core objectives will now be successively submitted for approval to the Provincial States and the State Secretary. State Secretary Koen Becking: “It is great that they are fully working on the new Frisian language and culture core objectives here in Fryslân. Good education starts with basic skills such as reading, writing, and arithmetic and applying them in subjects like history and biology. The new national curriculum lays a solid foundation for all students, clarifies what they need to know and be able to do, and gives teachers more clarity about what students really need to learn. How exactly they do that is up to the teacher and the school.”

The core objectives are expected to come into effect on August 1, 2026. Primary education schools and lower secondary education can then start working with the new core objectives at the beginning of the 2026/2027 school year. Beforehand, all schools in Fryslân will be informed about the new core objectives in various ways. The core objectives can already be found on the website www.kurrikulum.frl

We aim for all schools to work with the Frisian language and culture core objectives from 2030 onwards. Schools will also have time and space to implement the updated core objectives for all other learning areas, with help from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW), SLO, and other educational organizations.
