Deputy Sijbe Knol: “With this Environmental Vision, we ensure that Fryslân remains recognizable in its landscape and living environment, but is ready for the future. Space is limited and the challenges are great. Choices are therefore necessary. In short: making room for the future without breaking with what makes Fryslân special.”

The Environmental Vision outlines Fryslân’s course towards 2050 with clear choices for our living environment. We work on strong nature and future-proof agriculture, with water and soil as the foundation. In cities and villages, space will be made for housing so that young people can build a future here and the elderly can live appropriately and age healthily. At the same time, we are gradually building a fossil-free and circular province with a reliable and affordable energy supply.

Effects Draft-POVI

The Environmental Impact Report (OER) shows that the choices in the Draft-POVI for Fryslân are expected to have a positive effect on most topics. Especially for broad prosperity, the vision scores well: there are positive effects on employment, facilities, attractive business locations, social cohesion, and inclusivity. The choices made also have favorable outcomes for socioeconomic points.

Participation

The vision was developed in collaboration with Frisian authorities, social organizations, companies, and our residents. Their ideas and ambitions, but also their concerns, were used in the creation of this vision. Because we make the future of Fryslân together.

Inspection Period

From March 11 to April 21, 2026, the Draft-POVI and accompanying documents are available for inspection. During this period, you can give your opinion by submitting a viewpoint. On Environmental Vision Fryslân, you can find how to do this.

After April 21, 2026, the province will review all responses. Then, the Provincial States will decide on the final adoption of the POVI. This is expected to take place in September 2026.
