Fryslân Valued for Quality of Life

Fryslân is widely appreciated for its peace, space, nature, and affordable housing. Students are also positive: nearly 90% recommend Fryslân as a place to study, and two-thirds of Frisian students expect to stay in the province to live and work. Companies also see opportunities: a quarter of non-Frisian companies are considering establishing themselves here.

Labor Market and Accessibility Remain Points of Attention

The research shows that there are challenges. The labor market is rated low by non-Frisians, and young people experience limited growth opportunities. Accessibility, especially towards the Randstad and North Fryslân, remains a point of attention. Additionally, the Frisian language is seen as a strength by residents, but can sometimes pose a barrier for newcomers.

Deputy Friso Douwstra: “Fryslân has a strong and recognizable story. However, we want to show that Fryslân stands not only for tradition, folklore, and pride but also for innovation and future orientation. We are the Circular Region and the capital of Water Technology. Together with, among others, the Economic Board Fryslân (in establishment), Merk Fryslân, and Planbureau Fryslân, we are working on a strong and contemporary story of Fryslân.”

Opportunities for the Future

The results of the ImagoMonitor provide a valuable basis for further profiling Fryslân as a region where living, working, and entrepreneurship come together well. This sub-study is a follow-up to the broad ImagoMonitor of 2024 and helps policymakers and entrepreneurs make targeted choices to make the province even more attractive.
