Increasing the visibility of the Frisian language is an important focus point in the Bestjoersôfspraak Fryske Taal en Kultuer (BFTK) 2024-2028. For this reason, the Provincial Executive decided in 2024 that from 2026 Frisian will be added to the traffic signs along provincial roads. In this context, two design variants have been created for multilingual signs.

Preference of residents central

Because traffic signs partly determine the streetscape and play a crucial role in traffic safety, the residents of Fryslân are asked via Stim fan Fryslân to indicate which design they find clearest. Residents can also indicate which design they believe best respects the equal status of Frisian: a separation between both languages with a so-called ‘language line’, or displaying Frisian in italics.

Participation period

From December 9 to 23, residents can cast their vote on their preferred variant via Stim fan Fryslân. The outcome of this consultation will be taken into account in the further decision-making about the final design of the multilingual traffic signs.
