Lowering the dike standards and increasing the evacuation fraction for the Wadden Islands have significant consequences in the event of flooding caused by an extreme storm. Residents and tourists face the isolated location of the islands. Lowering the standard from once every 1000 years to once every 300 or even once every 100 years and increasing the evacuation fraction requires careful consideration. The safety of residents and tourists must be paramount.
The region (Wadden Islands, provinces of Fryslân and Noord-Holland, Wetterskip Fryslân, Hoogheemraadschap Holland Noorderkwartier) has sent a position paper and a factsheet to the House of Representatives.
