Erik Akerboom will resign as director-general of the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) at the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations as of June 1, 2026. Erik will remain in service as an extraordinary advisor at the General Administrative Service, where he will contribute to the central government and society starting June 1.

It is not easy to leave the service after six years. I look back on a wonderful period where I have worked intensively with highly motivated people. The service stands strong. I have full confidence that the protection of national security and the democratic rule of law at the AIVD will be in good hands and will remain so.

Drs. E.S.M. (Erik) Akerboom MPM has held his position since May 1, 2020. Before that, he was chief of police. Previously, he served as secretary-general at the Ministry of Defence, National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security at the former Ministry of Security and Justice, and Director of Democratic Rule of Law at the AIVD.

The AIVD and the Ministry of BZK respect his choice. They thank him for the way he has fulfilled his role and for his contribution to a safe Netherlands.

The vacancy procedure for the successor of Erik Akerboom will be started soon.
