Georg Driegen will become Director of Operations at the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) as of January 1, 2026.

The world around us is changing rapidly. The threats facing the Netherlands are cross-border and have a significant impact on national security. For the AIVD, this means that the demand for intelligence work is growing, as is its complexity. In a challenging context, the Operations Directorate is responsible for acquiring the best intelligence, using a wide range of technical, operational, and cyber activities. The directorate faces a challenging growth and innovation task due to the changing intelligence needs and technological developments. The Director of Operations will lead two major organizational change processes that will result in the reorganization of the directorate. Together with the other MT members of the service, the director is responsible for strategy, vision, organizational development, and renewal of the organization. They manage the service, connect the directorates, and are the figurehead of service-wide leadership. The director works with partner organizations at home and abroad and maintains a strong network with national partners and foreign services. The director works closely with the MIVD.

Georg Driegen:

I am honored to start in this fantastic position. I look forward to leading a directorate where I have worked with great pleasure myself. These are turbulent times, with many challenges ahead. I have confidence in our organization and look forward to contributing as an MT member to the challenges we face.”

Georg has worked at the AIVD for 25 years and has held various leadership and operational roles in both the Intelligence and Operations directorates.

Georg studied Human Development with a specialization in Change Management.

Erik Akerboom, Director-General AIVD:

“I am pleased with the appointment of Georg as Director of Operations. Georg knows the organization well. With his connecting and open leadership style, he is the ideal candidate for this position. I am convinced that he can further advance the course set by Operations. Additionally, with his background and his driven and collaborative personality, he is a valuable asset to the MT.”

This appointment to an ABD position was made through a procedure of the Directorate-General for the General Administrative Service (DGABD). The DGABD conducted the recruitment for this appointment and supported the AIVD in the selection. The vacancy was widely announced as usual, so everyone could apply.
