1 in 6 students in Limburg is German

The number of German students in the Netherlands is largest in South Limburg, where 4.4 thousand attend a university or college. In the city of Groningen and surroundings, there are 2.3 thousand, followed by 2.0 thousand in North Limburg, 1.9 thousand in Twente, and 1.2 thousand in the Arnhem/Nijmegen area.

Outside the border area, the number of German students is largest in the Amsterdam region with 3.0 thousand. Their share is small, about 1 in 50 students is German there.

More than 5 thousand Belgian students study in the Netherlands. Of these, 2.0 thousand study in Limburg and 650 in North Brabant. The remaining Belgian students mainly follow their education in the Randstad.

Few Dutch students in the German border area

Conversely, only a limited number of Dutch students attend higher education in the two German states bordering the Netherlands. In total, in the 2023/24 academic year, there were over 900 in North Rhine-Westphalia and just over 200 in Lower Saxony.

8 thousand Dutch students in Flanders

More than 8 thousand Dutch students study higher education in Flanders. The Antwerp district has 3.0 thousand Dutch students. In Ghent, there are 1.7 thousand. Leuven, Hasselt, and Turnhout complete the top five.
