In 2024, household residual waste increased to 179 kilograms per inhabitant, one kilo more than in 2023. Schiermonnikoog, Texel, and Vlieland collect the most residual waste. This is mainly because many tourists visit these Wadden Islands. Large cities, which often have less space to collect waste separately, also collect a lot of residual waste. Land van Cuijk, Horst aan de Maas, and Reusel-De Mierden collect the least waste.
A possible reason for the increase in household residual waste is that more municipalities have started post-sorting residual waste. In 2024, about 60 percent of municipalities did this fully or partially.
Due to digitization, there is less paper and cardboard to collect. In 2024, 39.7 kilograms per inhabitant were collected. In 2023, this was still 40.6 kilograms per inhabitant. Schiermonnikoog, Vlieland, and Ameland collect the most. Rotterdam, The Hague, and Texel collect the least old paper and cardboard.
In 2024, 91.7 kilograms of gft waste per inhabitant were collected, compared to 91.5 kilograms in 2023. The municipalities collecting the most gft waste are Westerveld, Ameland, and Land van Cuijk. Among the municipalities collecting gft, the least is collected in Rotterdam, The Hague, and Amsterdam. Vlieland, Terschelling, and Schiermonnikoog do not collect gft separately.
28 kilograms of wood waste per inhabitant were collected, compared to 25 kilograms in 2023. In Zeeland (56 kilograms per inhabitant) and Friesland (48 kilograms) more than average is collected, while in Overijssel (18 kilograms per inhabitant) and Gelderland (22 kilograms) less is collected.
The most wood is collected in Lopik. Among the municipalities collecting wood, the least is collected in Staphorst, Lingewaard, and Voorst. In Ermelo, Nunspeet, Rozendaal, and Terschelling wood is not collected separately.
Since 2007, it has been possible to separately collect disposable diapers so that the raw materials from the diapers can be recycled. In 2024, this was possible in 119 municipalities. In 2024, 1.2 kilograms of diapers per inhabitant were collected, compared to 0.9 kilograms in 2007.
Noord-Brabant (3.4 kilograms per inhabitant) and Gelderland (3.2 kilograms per inhabitant) collect the most diapers. In North Holland (0.2 kilograms per inhabitant) and South Holland (0.1 kilograms per inhabitant), relatively few diapers are collected. This does not mean fewer diapers are used there, but that diapers are collected separately in fewer municipalities. In Friesland, no diapers are collected, as far as CBS knows.
Among all municipalities that collect diapers separately, the most diapers are collected in Berkelland, Baarle-Nassau, and Nederweert. The least is collected in Arnhem, Edam-Volendam, and Noordwijk.
